How to Break the Mountain Dew Addiction – Part III
I have written two posts (part one here & part two here) regarding this topic already and I just thought about a couple of things and wanted to add to the series. Breaking the addiction to Mountain Dew is NOT easy, by any means. I have gone without it for a couple of days and find the caffine headache hard enough to handle.
The other day, I was putting a lemon wedge into my water bottle before going on a walk. We all know that it is refreshing to taste that bit of lemon in your water. As soon as I took the first full drink of the water, I felt like it didn’t taste that different from Mountain Dew.
I know that Mountain Dew is a combination of a lot of different things. but I thought I would take that idea and put a shot of lemon juice or two right into a Mountain Dew bottle that has water in it. I started to think that it was more mental than anything else. The Mountain Dew bottle in my hand was like a straw in the mouth of someone trying to quit smoking.
At first, I would even try to skip Mountain Dew 100%, but maybe slide the water bottle idea in for every other soda you drink. You will see the difference immediately and realize that you are actually not craving the Mountain Dew as much. Plus it doesn’t hurt to have more liquids in your body other than soda.
Let me know how it goes for you, comment below. If you know anyone else that might benefit from this post, go ahead and send it to them via Twitter.

How to Break the Mountain Dew Addiction Part II
So, if you haven’t read already, I sort of have an addiction to Mountain Dew. I am not sure when it started, or why, for that matter, but it has had a strong hold on me for about 2-3 years. It may have been when I worked the night shift at my current job and I thought the Mountain Dew was like my “coffee”.
Nonetheless, I am still some what addicted to the soda. When I say addicted, I mean that if there is a Mountain Dew anywhere in the house and I want a soda, the Mountain Dew goes down the hatch before any other liquid. Is that considered an addiction?
Maybe it is. BUT it has sort of subsided and when I say that I mean that if there is NO Mountain Dew in the house, I am NOT running out to the store to buy some, just to have it. I think I am making a couple of steps in the right direction with this addiction and it really is just about will power and trying new things.
One thing that I have been trying to do is drink more water. My body feels better and I don’t have these sugar fueled energy swings all day. Also, I have been trying to drink OTHER sodas or juices to get used to any other taste. I think that if I get used to having another taste in my mouth, I will stop drinking Mountain Dew, so often.

So for the last, 3 years or so I have been drinking Mountain Dew. I will occasionally have other types of soda, but Mountain Dew is my choice if it’s available. I think I am addicted to Mountain Dew and I think it started during a promotion called CallYourPlay.com. I was drinking 3 to 4 of them per day and it didn’t matter what time of the day that it was, if I was thirsty, I was drinking one, plus it was nice to have all those sweepstakes entries.
I think others are addicted to Mountain Dew as well. You always read blogs or a news article about how a “gamer” drinks a 12 pack of Dew without any issue, or that children that drink Mountain Dew have a greater risk of cavities, etc. It’s NO joke. Gamers will drink Mountain Dew all day long. I even read that Microsoft programmers where drinking Mountain Dew back in the early years of Mircosoft, just so they could code for 36 hours straight!
There isn’t any doubt soda can be addicting and to break that addiction to Mountain Dew, or any other type of soda, can be tough. But don’t kid yourself, it can be done! I thought of a few things that have worked for me and a couple I should try to get off Mountain Dew completely.
- Stop buying Mountain Dew – some people think this is an easy one, but when you are addicted, you are addicted all the way. It takes some finesse to miss the soda isle, but it can be done.
- If you have Mountain Dew left in the fridge, keep ONE bottle, put it through the dish washer and use it for water for the next week or so. Do NOT drink anymore Mountain Dew.
- Try different types of water if you do not like tap water. When you find one you like, look for specials and discounts for the water. Sobe Life Water is a good choice if you like a flavored water.
- Try different types of teas, or juice to keep your mind off the Mountain Dew.
Those are just 4 things that I have been working on and the first two are complete for me. It might take a month or more to get out of the Moutain Dew habit, but it can be done as long as you are in control of the soda purchases. Tell the people you see and deal with everyday that you are trying to get off soda and they might even lend a helping hand, you never know. If you NEED something to drink, why not try some natural energy tea, we recommend the Holy Tea.
